The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has seized electronic devices belonging to New York City Mayor Eric Adams as an escalation of a federal corruption investigation into his 2021 mayoral campaign.
The FBI confirmed that it confiscated a variety of electronics from Adams, including two cell phones and one iPad. This confiscation comes after an FBI raid earlier this month on the home of Brianna Suggs, Adams’ leading campaign fundraiser. (Related: Sanctuary City New York spent over $5 billion in taxpayer money the previous fiscal year to provide services for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.)
The confiscation was allegedly conducted by FBI agents who approached Adams in the street and asked his security detail to step away while they entered his vehicle and seized the devices under the authorization of a court-issued warrant.
The warrant allowed the FBI to copy any data it deemed relevant on the confiscated devices. The FBI returned all of the equipment to Adams within a matter of days.
“As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any sort of investigation, and I will continue to do that,” said Adams. “I have nothing to hide.”
While Adams has expressed his willingness to cooperate with federal authorities, his statement on the matter has indicated that he believes somebody else in his campaign is guilty of corruption.
“I am outraged and angry if anyone attempted to use the campaign to manipulate our democracy and defraud our campaign,” he said. “I want to be clear: I have no knowledge, direct or otherwise, of any improper fundraising activity and certainly not of any foreign money.”
The FBI’s investigation is currently focused on whether or not Adams’ 2021 campaign illicitly received funding from foreign sources, including the government of Turkey. Previous reports have pointed out that Adams and his campaign have repeatedly refused requests from regulators to divulge the source of about $300,000 in donations.
These old reports previously suggested that the donations came from about 500 different sources, and the FBI’s investigation is now suggesting that most of these donors are Turkish nationals who may have made improper donations as part of a “straw donors scheme.”
A straw donor is a person or company who illegally makes a donation with someone else’s money but uses their own name to hide its true source.
The FBI is concerned that the campaign may have given illegal kickbacks to Turkish officials. Adams himself has been noted as having traveled to Turkey several times in the past few years, including during his time as borough president of Brooklyn. He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
The FBI’s investigation is also seeking records about donations from Bay Atlantic University in Washington, D.C., a college whose founder is Turkish and is affiliated with a school Adams visited when he went to Turkey as Brooklyn borough president in 2015.
Adams has also repeatedly boasted about his close ties to Turkey, even claiming once that he is “probably the only mayor in the history of this city that has not only visited Turkey once, but I think I’m on my sixth or seventh visit to Turkey.”
