Fluoride is in just about everything. It’s frequently added to the water supply, so it’s probably in your drinking water. It’s in most conventional oral health products such as toothpaste and mouthwash. It is nearly impossible to avoid, even in spite of growing concern over the negative affects associated with fluoride.
Fluoride exposure has many severe side effects, especially on the brain. This is because fluoride is a neurotoxin, which means it has a negative effect on neurons, the nervous system and the brain itself. For example, there is evidence that indicates that exposure to fluoride is associated with a lower IQ. This effect is most prevalent in children, who are still undergoing neurological development.
Fluoride can also impair the brain development of unborn infants and lead to several neurological problems. Detrimental effects to learning and memory capacity have also been associated with fluoride use. Fluoride also increases the presence of two toxic heavy metals, aluminum and lead, in the brain and in the bloodstream. You can see where that could be dangerous.
In addition to these hazardous neurological effects, fluoride can accumulate in the pineal gland. This can affect the production of melatonin, which is the hormone responsible for maintaining regular sleep/wake cycles. Fluoride can also negatively affect the thyroid gland and lead to a metabolic abnormality known as hypothyroidism. Studies have also shown that cities with fluoridated water also have higher cancer rates, to boot.
A recent article published by Pharmacognosy Magazine that was entitled, “Curcumin Attenuates Neurotoxicity Induced by Fluoride” revealed that this component of the turmeric root might help to inhibit the negative affects of fluoride exposure.
This new study analyzed lab rats that were given fluoridated water. Researchers found that rats who were fed curcumin along with the fluoridated water showed substantially lower amounts of oxidative neurological damage as compared to their counterparts who were just given the water. Of course, this is not the first study to showcase the neuroprotective benefits of curcumin. At least 200 other previous studies have indicated that turmeric and curcumin offer many health benefits. Another new study revealed that curcumin may even help people suffering with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease.
Turmeric has many health benefits and is just one of many superfoods that can be taken to help support a healthy body and mind.
